The art of film
Film is an art form on par with theater, literature, and music, but “film art” can also refer to artistically successful films. In this class, we will explore film as an art form as well as the artistically accomplished films that have the potential to change us and our lives.
Film as an art form dates back to 1895 and, compared to other art forms, has a short and relatively straightforward history that is fairly easy to access. We will delve into the most important artistic trends, key films, and major directors from the late 19th century to the 21st century. Along the way, we will immerse ourselves in quality films from countries as diverse as Denmark, Germany, Mexico, South Korea, Iran, and, of course, the USA.
We will also analyze the formal and stylistic techniques used in films to communicate their messages to an audience e.g. specific narrative structures, lighting, set design, editing, or soundtracks.
Last but not least, we will discuss what each of us considers to be great film art. Even if a film is objectively well-crafted and regarded as a milestone in film history, it may not necessarily resonate with us on a personal level.
For instance, do we prefer the latest Palme d’Or winner from Cannes, Anora, or the Hollywood blockbuster Gladiator 2?
Whether you lean toward one, the other, or both, we aim to make this class your introduction into a lifelong passion for cinema.
