Danish Culture

Being new to Denmark, this højskole sweet spot you have arrived at may seem somewhat unfamiliar and strange to you. We may do things a little (or very) differently from what you are used to. For instance, why do Danes love singing so much? What is the deal about rye bread? How come we all address the principal by his first name?

This subject invites you behind the scenes of living like a Dane and offers you a way to decipher some of the everyday encounters, customs and experiences that leave you wondering why we do things the way we do.

Together, we will explore the history, traditions, and everyday life in Denmark to give you a deeper understanding of the country you are living in.

We will work with topics like cultural identity, unique aspects of Danish history, and the social systems that shape daily life in Denmark. What is the history behind our political system, educational system and the folk high school movement? What are the characteristics of Danish music and art? What is special about Denmark and the Danish way of life?

Through excursions, discussions, hands-on activities, and shared experiences, we will uncover what makes Denmark unique.

This subject is taught in English.
