Come on a study trip to Ghana

Join us on a discovery of Ghana. We arrive on the Gold Coast and travel inland through colonial history, development work, music, dance and cultural identity.

Explore Ghana with us – a country that is “off the beaten track” and ready to rival the classic gap year destinations as your authentic travel choice.

We arrive on the historic Gold Coast and venture into a dynamic, warm and welcoming country formed by colonial history. We will experience both village and urban life behind the scenes – thanks in part to a unique 30-year-long collaboration between the Danish association Ghana Venskab and Silkeborg Højskole.

Stay with a local family

Based out of the city of Tamale, we will test our talents within West African music and dance traditions, explore the vibrant capital city Accra and maybe even go on safari!

A true authentic experience awaits you in a small local village. For two days you will stay as a guest in a local family’s home taking part in daily life, helping out in the kitchen and in the fields, and playing with the children. This is your chance to experience the Ghanaian hospitality firsthand.

Youth projects that make a difference

As part of the trip, you will gain unique insight into development work in action. We will meet with NGOs working to improve conditions for the country’s most disadvantaged people and pay a visit to YEFL’s youth projects, which aim to strengthen young people’s participation in their local communities. In Tamale, we will join a sports project that gets young people moving empowering their sense of autonomy.

Why Ghana?
Ghana is a fantastic, friendly, and culturally rich country. It was the first country south of the Sahara to gain independence from British colonial rule in 1957 and is today considered one of Africa’s most stable democracies. As a pioneer nation, Ghana has inspired many other African countries. Here, tradition and modernity go hand in hand in all aspects from fashion to music, street art, culture, religion, and spirituality. Together, we’ll experience this unique destination from the front row.

It felt as if the Danes have stolen the word “hygge” from a nation like Ghana. They come together whenever they can, playing games or enjoying simple activities. I don’t know what Danes have done to claim the concept “hygge,” because the Ghanaians are far better at it than we are.

An experience that really made me see the world differently was when the Ghanaians threw themselves at the food we couldn’t finish. That was when poverty really hit home.

We visited the village of Kpanashie, where we stayed with families in their clay huts. They live in a very simple way – the women cook and take care of the children, while the men work in the fields. The children sometimes go to school, but only when the teachers feel like making the long trip out to the village. So they spend most of their time playing together.

It’s incredible to experience how you can make everyday life work in such a completely different way. The West tend to think that we are the only ones who knows how to build a functioning society. But we could actually learn a lot from the Ghanaians about the quality of life.

The completely simple way of living made a big impression on me. There is no stress or rush – they do things at their own pace. It made me reflect on how everything does not have to move so fast all the time, and how important it is to enjoy the small things in life.

Going to Ghana as a group was a great experience. We’ve talked a lot afterwards about how wonderful it was to have each other. Our evening gatherings in Ghana were the best – we have never sung as much as we did there, and we developed a great feeling of togetherness, and I wouldn’t want to be without it.
