On this study trip, we challenge the idea of "Africa" as a continent defined by poverty as we journey through South Africa's colonial past, the story of apartheid, and the country's postcolonial future.

Throughout the journey, we will be accompanied by Maia Marie, our local guide. Maia Marie previously worked as a folk high school teacher in Denmark before returning to her home country, where she now shares her knowledge, experiences, and unique perspective on South Africa.

Johannesburg

Our journey begins in Johannesburg, South Africa's largest city, the country's economic heart, and one of Africa's most exciting cultural capitals. Shaped by its diverse population, complex history, and remarkable creative energy, Johannesburg offers a rich blend of literature, art, music, and food waiting to be explored.

A city full of energy

Johannesburg is a city of contrasts. It carries the memories of a painful past while refusing to let history define its future. Artists, entrepreneurs, and musicians bring new life to its neighbourhoods, where colourful murals transform city walls into expressions of hope and change. Jazz spills from open doorways, markets buzz with life, and the aromas of street food fill the air alongside the sounds of conversation and laughter.

People from across the African continent come to Johannesburg carrying dreams, ambitions, and determination.

It is a meeting place of languages, cultures, and stories, reminding us that although this was once a city built on the search for gold, its greatest wealth lies in the resilience, creativity, and spirit of its people.

Cape Town - where culture meets nature

From Johannesburg, we continue to Cape Town, where dramatic natural landscapes provide the backdrop for one of the world's most diverse and vibrant cultural scenes.

Table Mountain rises above the city as its iconic landmark, while the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet along a spectacular coastline of white beaches, rugged cliffs, and abundant wildlife.

Nature is never far away in Cape Town. Within minutes, you can leave the lively streets behind and find yourself hiking scenic trails with breathtaking views of mountains and ocean.

Together, we will experience the dramatic cliffs of Cape Point and feel the power of the waves where the oceans meet.

Cape Town is equally rich in culture. Its history is reflected in its architecture, music, and art, where African, European, and Asian influences come together to create something uniquely South African.

We will spend evenings exploring the vibrant V&A Waterfront, soaking up the atmosphere, enjoying live street music, and experiencing the city's energy after dark.

Throughout our time in Cape Town, we will discover a city deeply connected to its history while constantly looking ahead. It offers countless opportunities to understand South Africa's journey from apartheid to democracy and to see how art and culture continue to play a vital role in shaping the country's future.
