Nestled between Spain and France lies a people with their own language, culture and identity. Their history continues to shape everyday life, making the Basque Country a unique place to explore.

Throughout the journey, we delve into stories of identity, the struggle for freedom, gastronomy, football and community, all surrounded by dramatic coastlines, vibrant cities and spectacular landscapes.

We meet local culture with curiosity, enjoy the region's renowned cuisine and experience everyday life in the Basque Country. We also walk part of the historic Camino del Norte pilgrimage route, where there is time to reflect, enjoy nature and share meaningful conversations with the people around you.

Who Are the Basques?

The Basques are one of Europe's oldest peoples. They do not primarily see themselves as Spanish or French, but as Basque. Their language, Euskara, is unlike any other language in Europe. During Franco's dictatorship, speaking or singing in Euskara in public was forbidden.

The attempt to suppress Basque culture did not erase it. Instead, it contributed to the emergence of a resistance movement that eventually developed into ETA (Euskadi Ta Askatasuna). For decades, ETA carried out violent attacks that claimed more than 800 lives.

Together, we explore this complex history and discuss what it means to fight for identity, and where the line between a struggle for freedom and terrorism is drawn.

Bilbao – A City Reinvented

Bilbao is a story of transformation.

Once an industrial city struggling with economic decline, Bilbao has reinvented itself through visionary architecture, culture and urban development, with the Guggenheim Museum becoming its international symbol.

We explore the city's modern neighbourhoods, stroll along the river and experience how history and innovation exist side by side.

Bilbao also provides an ideal setting for discussing urban development, identity and the role of culture in society – themes that reach far beyond the borders of the Basque Country.

Athletic Club – More Than Football

We end one of our days at the iconic San Mamés Stadium, home of Athletic Club Bilbao.

For more than a century, Athletic Club has followed a unique philosophy by primarily fielding players with Basque roots. The club is much more than a football team. It is a powerful symbol of local identity, pride and belonging.

Even if football is not your passion, visiting Athletic Club offers a fascinating insight into how sport can unite people around a shared history and culture.

Camino del Norte

Perhaps you have already walked Amarminoen or Camønoen in Denmark.

In the Basque Country, however, you can experience part of the original Camino de Santiago.

We lace up our hiking boots and walk a section of the Camino del Norte along the Cantabrian coast, one of Europe's most spectacular coastal landscapes.

Walking together allows us to experience nature at a slower pace, leaving room for conversation, reflection and a strong sense of community.
