Coming to Denmark

Students from EU/EAA countries

EU/EEA nationals can freely take up residence in Denmark. However, since your folk high school stay will last for more than three months, you must apply for an EU residence document. Please read more about the requirements.

1. APPLY FOR AN EU RESIDENCE DOCUMENT
A few weeks after your arrival in Denmark, you will complete the online ‘OD1’ application form and submit it to SIRI (The Danish Agency for Recruitment and Integration). Within two weeks of submitting your application you must show in person at SIRI’s Aarhus branch to present your application and your passport and to have your biometric features recorded. SIRI will usually issue your EU residence document straight away. The school secretary will guide you through the process and accompany you.

1.1 ARE YOU UNDER THE AGE OF 18?
If you have not yet turned 18, one of your parents must give you written permission to study in Denmark. You must present your birth certificate (translated into Danish or English with a notary stamp). Please make sure to refer to this page for the specific requirements.

2. REGISTER AT THE MUNICIPALITY OF SILKEBORG
You may then obtain a Civil Registration System (CPR) Number at the Municipality of Silkeborg. The moment you receive your yellow health card, you are covered by the Danish healthcare system on equal terms as Danish students.

3. PRACTICAL PREPARATIONS
We advise you to obtain the blue European health insurance card from your local authorities. This will cover you until you receive the Danish yellow health card.

If you have any questions, please email our school secretary Helle Lykke Larsen.

Students from NON-EU countries

It requires a residence permit to participate in a folk high school stay in Denmark; a so-called: ST1 – Residence and work permit – long stay.
Please read more about the requirements here.

1. SEND US A COPY OF YOUR PASSPORT
For us to have your accurate details, please send us a copy of your valid passport (visible picture, name and passport number). Your passport must be valid until at least six months after the school term finishes. If your place of birth is not stated in your passport, you must also provide a copy of your birth certificate.

2. THE SCHOOL WILL TAKE OUT A CASE ORDER ID
We will take out a Case Order ID, which is necessary to have your application processed with VFS Global and SIRI (The Danish Agency for Recruitment and Integration). We will email you the receipt before you book your appointment with VFS Global. The fee is included in your payment to the school.

3. BOOK AN APPOINTMENT WITH VFS GLOBAL
Book an appointment with your nearest VFS Global branch to take place in the beginning of October / May. Please pay attention that you choose the right type of visa (not a tourist visa!). Please notify us of the scheduled date. You will find the specific instructions here.

Pay an Embassy fee of DKK 1,725 by credit card. The Case Order ID must be stated on the payment form.

4. THE SCHOOL WILL INITIATE THE ‘ST1’ APPLICATION
When you inform us of your appointment at VFS Global, the school will initiate the process by filling in Part 2 of the online ST1 application. Then we will forward you the application reference number and password so you can complete Part 1. The application will remain open for 30 days, so make sure to finish it off before it expires.

5. FILL IN PART 1
Fill in Part 1 of the online ST1 application and make sure to save the form in a safe place on your computer. You will have to print a copy to take with you. Please note that you must not submit the form until there are less than 14 days remaining for your scheduled appointment.

Please note that you must 1) print, sign, PDF and attach the ‘Sworn declaration – student’ and 2) take copies of all the pages of your passport including the back and the front cover and PDF them into one file so that you can attach all the documents to your application, before you submit it. Remember to save the application to your computer, before you close your browser!

Please note that if you are under the age of 18 you need a declaration of consent from both your parents or the custody holder. You need to enclose a copy of the data page of your parents’ passports.

6. SHOW UP IN PERSON FOR YOUR APPOINTMENT
Within two weeks of submitting your application you must show in person at VFS Global for your scheduled appointment to hand in your application and have your biometric features recorded. You will be asked to pay a service fee of 27 EURO to VFS Global.

Please remember to bring with you:

1)   your valid passport

2)   copies of all the pages of your passport including the cover (back and front)

3)   a printed copy of your application incl. the Sworn declaration – student*

4)   a printed copy of the Case Order ID fee receipt*

5)   a printed copy of the Visa handling fee receipt

6)   Acceptance letter from the school

*We will email you these, when we have received your payment of the school fee.

VFS Global will hand over your application to The Danish Embassy, who will subsequently submit the documents to SIRI, i.e. the Danish Agency for International Recruitment and Integration in Denmark, who will deal with your application for a residence permit. This may take up to two months.

7. PREPARE YOURSELF FOR AN INTERVIEW
Prepare to be summoned for an interview where you will explain why you are applying for admission to a Danish folk high school. The authorities will also assess your English skills. It is solely the Danish authorities who decide whether they will issue a residence permit to you.

It may be useful to learn more about the concept of højskole here.

8. ENQUIRIES ON YOUR BEHALF
Once your application has been passed on to the Danish authorities, Silkeborg Højskole will be able to make enquiries about your application. If you wish us to do so, please fill in and return a Power of Attorney to the school. We will email this to you together with the above mentioned receipts.

9. PRACTICAL PREPARATIONS
Once you have obtained your residence permit, you can finalise your travel plans. We advise you to purchase travel insurance, which is valid for 6 to 8 weeks after your arrival at the school. We will assist you in scheduling an appointment with the Municipality in Silkeborg, so you can register your address at the school and obtain a CPR number (Civil Registration System). The moment you receive your yellow health card, you are covered by the Danish healthcare system on equal terms as Danish students.

If you have any questions, please email school secretary Helle Lykke Larsen.
