Nature calls

Friluftsliv på tur-hovedfag på Silkeborg Højskole

Nature is more than somewhere we go

What does nature really mean and what part do we play in it?

In this course, we'll explore nature with both body and mind. Together, we'll dive into some of the biggest questions of our time: Who decides what happens to our landscapes? How do we make room for the countless species we share the planet with? And how can we help shape a better future for the natural world?

We believe nature is much more than a backdrop or a resource. It's a living community that we're already part of.

That's why this course isn't just about learning about nature, it's about experiencing it, understanding it and discovering your own connection to it.

We'll spend plenty of time outdoors

Some will say too much.

You'll learn classic Nordic outdoor skills, head out on trips, cook over an open fire and explore the forests, lakes and landscapes surrounding our school. Along the way, you'll gain a deeper understanding of nature, but also of yourself and the friendships that grow through shared experiences.

During late summer and autumn, we'll:

  • collect seeds and learn about native plants and species
  • go birdwatching with binoculars
  • make hot blackcurrant cordial on a stove inside a traditional canvas tent
  • experience the changing seasons up close

We'll also visit Alling Nature Park, a community-led rewilding project where nature is being given the space to recover on its own terms.

Here, we'll learn about ecological restoration, encounter large grazing animals and discover how people and nature can work together to create a wilder future.

Every session offers new experiences, conversations and moments of wonder that invite reflection on our place in the natural world.

The aim isn't simply to learn more about nature, but to leave with a stronger connection to it and the desire to carry that relationship with you long after your time at Silkeborg Højskole.
