The Outdoor House is built in sustainable materials and blends naturally into the landscape with the forest as the backdrop.

Sustainability

At Silkeborg Højskole, sustainability is not just something we talk about. Sustainability is at the basis of strategy and in all our endeavours.

We have made choices for you as a student, which means that you have a low CO2 emission while you live at the højskole.

We have made it easy for you to make green choices at the lunch buffet. When you turn on the lamp in your room, we have made sure it does not use a lot of electricity. And 40% of the power you use comes from our roof solar panels.

Inspiration to live sustainably

Through our daily life and teaching at the højskole, we talk about which actions really make a difference – and which that do not.

We also endeavour to inform and inspire, so you as a student are best prepared to reflect on the choices you have to make in life after you leave the højskole.

These are some of the initiatives we have worked with in order to make Silkeborg Højskole more sustainable:

  • Technology that helps save energi on heating
  • Solar panel system on the roof, which covers 40% of the school’s electricity usage
  • Conversion to LED bulbs
  • No use of pesticides on outdoor areas
  • Saves on district heating water
  • Eco-friendly cleaning products and procedures
  • Sustainable materials in new buildings
  • 30% organic certification in the kitchen
  • Reduction of food waste
  • Climate compensation for our flights through Folkekirkens Nødhjælp
  • Social responsibility; we welcome several employees in flex jobs and offer internships for people in job training.

Mindful travelling

We believe that you have to experience nature, foreign cultures and the injustice in the world in order to understand. It is – and we are – all connected.

No matter the destination, we prepare thoroughly for our stydy trips and Explorer travels to make sure we have a thorough understanding of the place we are visiting. We view every trip as an educational experience, not a vacation.

We do our best to plan our study tours and Explorer travles as climate-friendly as possible. Where possible we travel by train or bus. However, we also offer travels to destinations that, within the time frame of a højskole stay, is only reachable by plane.

Therefore, we accept air travel when it is the only option.
